Education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty and creating opportunities for a better future. In many parts of Mauritania, especially in rural and marginalized communities, thousands of young children, including orphans, victims’ children, and refugees, struggle to access education. Many are forced to work or beg to support their families, keeping them out of school and limiting their future potential.
To address this issue, Orphans Alliance is working with local and international partners to support education and sports programs for vulnerable children. This initiative provides school materials, scholarships, online learning, vocational training, and structured sports programs to ensure that young Mauritanians can leave the streets and enter classrooms and learning centers where they can develop essential skills for a brighter future.
Taking Children Off the Streets and Into Classrooms
One of the most important goals of this program is to help children leave street life and return to education. Many vulnerable children have no access to school because of poverty, displacement, or loss of family support.
Orphans Alliance works with communities to:
- Identify and support street children, orphans, and refugee youth.
- Provide shelter, food, and care for those in extreme poverty.
- Enroll them in schools, learning centers, or vocational programs.
- Monitor their progress and provide mentorship to ensure success.
This process rescues children from dangerous conditions and gives them a safe and supportive environment to learn and grow.

Addressing Barriers to Education
Many young Mauritanians, particularly orphans, victims’ children, and refugees, face significant challenges in accessing education due to poverty, discrimination, and lack of resources. Without essential school supplies such as notebooks, textbooks, and uniforms, attending and succeeding in school becomes difficult. Social and economic inequalities further marginalize these children, limiting their access to quality education. To address these challenges, Orphans Alliance provides necessary learning materials, ensuring students have the tools to fully engage in their education.
Scholarships and Financial Assistance
Financial hardship often forces children into labor or begging, preventing them from continuing their studies. Additionally, discrimination based on socio-economic status or refugee background further limits their opportunities. Orphans Alliance offers full and partial scholarships covering tuition, transportation, meals, and daily school expenses, reducing financial burdens and ensuring that education remains accessible to all children, regardless of their background.
Expanding Learning Through online Education
In rural and marginalized areas, where access to quality education is restricted, Orphans Alliance integrates digital learning by providing laptops, tablets, internet access, and online tutoring. Virtual classrooms and global learning resources bridge the education gap, ensuring students receive the same opportunities as those in urban centers. By combining school supplies, scholarships, and technology-driven learning, Orphans Alliance empowers young Mauritanians to overcome discrimination and economic hardship, giving them the knowledge and skills needed for a brighter future.

Keeping Youth Active and Off the Streets
Sports play a vital role in youth development, especially for orphans, victims’ children, refugees, and marginalized communities. Many young people in these areas lack safe spaces for recreation and risk getting involved in street life, crime, or other negative influences. After-school sports programs provide a structured and positive environment where youth can develop discipline, teamwork, and confidence.
Orphans Alliance is introducing soccer (football) and basketball programs to help keep children engaged, healthy, and focused on their future. These programs include:
- After-school training sessions with professional coaches.
- Community tournaments and competitions to encourage participation.
- Providing sports equipment such as jerseys, shoes, and balls.
- Building safe spaces such as playgrounds and sports fields.
These activities give young Mauritanians a sense of purpose, help them develop leadership skills, and promote social inclusion. Sports also create pathways to scholarships, mentorship programs, and professional opportunities for talented youth.
