Our Mission

The Orphans Alliance is committed to combating systemic racism, discrimination, slavery, and oppression, while advocating for justice, equality, and universal human rights, with a specific focus on Mauritania. Our mission is to support marginalized communities, expose injustices, and demand accountability from perpetrators of human rights violations. By amplifying silenced voices and addressing both historical and contemporary abuses, we aim to build a society rooted in dignity, peace, and fairness for all.

We are committed to seeking justice while fostering opportunities for marginalized Black communities in Mauritania through education, healthcare, and job training. For decades, the widows of those who were murdered or disappeared have borne the weight of injustice. We stand with them, providing support and amplifying their voices in the pursuit of recognition and systemic reform. By addressing the root causes of inequality, we aim to break cycles of poverty and oppression, ensuring a more just and equitable future. We call on the global community to join us in demanding accountability and meaningful change.

We are the children of Black Mauritanian soldiers, victims of a brutal ethnic cleansing campaign orchestrated in November 1990. These courageous men torn from their families were executed without trial, abandoned in mass graves, and erased from history by a regime that wielded oppression and terror as tools of control. We are the Orphans Alliance, a movement born from the legacy of their courage, built upon their sacrifices, and fueled by an unwavering commitment to justice and dignity.

Martin Luther King Jr. said "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere."

we stand for our rightsOur key objectives include

1. Repealing Amnesty Law 93.23
Enacted in 1993 and still in effect today, Amnesty Law 93.23 shields individuals responsible for atrocities and human rights violations committed since 1989. Its repeal is crucial to dismantling the culture of impunity, upholding justice, and ensuring accountability for these crimes.

2. Initiating an independent investigation to locate and address mass graves throughout Mauritania, identify the remains of victims, uncover the truth behind the atrocities, honor their memory, and provide justice and closure to their families.

3. Ensuring the safe, dignified return and successful reintegration of Mauritanian refugees from Senegal and Mali, fostering reconciliation, healing, and the restoration of social cohesion.

4. Standing Against Slavery:
Despite its official abolition, slavery continues to persist in Mauritania in 2024. We strongly advocate for the rigorous enforcement of anti-slavery laws, accountability for perpetrators, and decisive measures to ensure its complete eradication.

Advancing Justice, Opportunity, and Well-being

Orphans Alliance was founded with a profound sense of purpose, shaped by lived experiences of hardship, sacrifice, and resilience. Many of us grew up witnessing our mothers "widows" burdened by poverty and systemic oppression struggle to provide for their families. Lacking access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities, we faced significant barriers to progress
